Our History

Dore & Totley are suburbs southwest of Sheffield on the Yorkshire/Derbyshire border. Dore lies on a hill above the River Sheaf from which two sources, Totley Brook and the Old Hay Brook flow down through Totley. Our church stands on the Totley Brook Road opposite the Sheffield to Manchester railway line which runs through the longest under-land rail tunnel in the UK.

Our church started 125 years ago.  The first building was the ‘tin tab’ located near the Dore & Totley railway station.  It was moved by horse and cart to its new location on Totley Brook Rd.  Here is a photo from those early days.

Christian nonconformist worship has taken place on this site since the Dore & Totley Union Church was founded in 1888, by a group of Christian friends who wanted to establish a church open to people from different denominations, with particular emphasis on union.  This identity continues to be recognised today reflecting the vision of the United Reformed Church (URC), described as the least ‘denominational’ denomination.  Since joining the URC in 1972 this church has become part of the Sheffield South Group of churches, reflecting the URC’s vision ‘for visible unity of the whole Church as Christ wills’.

This has been the most exciting phase for Dore & Totley URC for many years. We have recently completed a major re-build project to make our buildings fit for the 21st century and meet current disabled access standards.  We have brand new rooms for hire suitable for small group meetings to larger halls ideal for exercise classes, children’s activities or family celebrations.  Our kitchen meets the best health & safety standards, complete with high speed dishwasher and ceramic hob cookers. Our coffee lounge is light, airy and easily accessed from the car park.  We have modernised our sanctuary so that a varied style of worship is possible whilst keeping many original features.  We’ve got a new roof too.  Church furniture can be easily moved to make a modern conference room with comfortable upholstered chairs.  We have an up to date electronic screen and projector and hearing loop system.

We want to use our new buildings to offer new ways of being church in our community.  We are looking to meet and engage with people who may want to explore ideas about faith.  We can offer you the type of special service you are comfortable with for weddings, baptisms and funerals.  Our church is not just for Sunday worship; it’s for everyone, every day of the week!
